Lake Sumner Forest Park — Hurunui River Valley Floor Dispersed Camp
The Hurunui River winds through a broad braided valley inside Lake Sumner Forest Park, and its gravel flats offer genuine dispersed camping under beech forest with the sound of fast water for company. There’s no signage marking your spot — you pick a flat above the waterline, kill the engine, and that’s camp. The area sees moderate use by hunters, anglers, and the odd overland crew running the Lewis Pass corridor. No facilities whatsoever. Fires are permitted outside the summer fire ban window — check DOC conditions before you light anything.
Access is off SH7 (Lewis Pass Road) via the Hurunui or Loch Katrine Road — expect unsealed gravel that turns greasy in rain and river fords that vary with snowmelt. High-clearance 4WD advised after any significant rainfall. Cell service is essentially zero once you’re past the valley entrance. Self-sufficient rigs only.
Beech forest riverflat. No frills, no people.
