Lake Sumner (Māruia) — Hurunui Valley Glacial Lake and Lewis Pass Gateway Viewpoint
Lake Sumner sits at the heart of the Lake Sumner Forest Park, cradled between the forested ridges of the Hurunui River headwaters in Canterbury’s back country. The lake stretches roughly 14 kilometres long and sits at around 500 metres elevation — cold, clear, and hemmed in by beech-covered hills. Standing at the water’s edge with the Hurunui peaks behind you, this is one of those spots that reminds you why you left the tarmac. It’s quiet, genuine, and almost entirely devoid of other humans once you push past the roadend.
Access from Hanmer Springs is via the unsealed Jollies Pass Road and the Clarence Road corridor — high-clearance 4WD recommended, especially after rain when creek crossings run full. The forest park sits under DOC management. No services out here; carry everything in. Late spring through autumn gives the most reliable road conditions. In winter this country can close fast.
