Theodore Roosevelt National Forest Killdeer Mountain Dispersed Area

Dispersed Camping

Killdeer Mountain’s dispersed sites sit at 3,000+ feet elevation, offering commanding views of the Little Missouri badlands to the south and prairie stretching to the horizon. Four main camping areas spread along the mountain’s access roads, each with fire rings and decent wind protection from scattered oak groves. The sites fill up during hunting seasons but remain quiet most of the year. No facilities means pack out everything — nearest water and supplies are 25 miles down in Killdeer.

Access requires high-clearance vehicles due to rocky sections and steep grades on the mountain roads. Winter access is impossible; spring can be muddy. The payoff is some of the best sunset views in western North Dakota and solid stargazing once the oil field lights fade in the distance.
