Killdeer Mountains Fire Tower Road

Climb to North Dakota's forgotten fire tower

Moderate

Forest Service Road 7442 winds 12 miles up the Killdeer Mountains to reach an abandoned fire tower at 3,506 feet – the highest accessible point in North Dakota. Built in the 1930s by the CCC, this rough track was the supply route for fire crews until the 1970s. The road passes through dense stands of burr oak and ash that survived the area’s frequent prairie fires, then emerges onto exposed ridges where you can see the Badlands of South Dakota, the Rockies of Montana, and the endless grasslands stretching toward Canada.

The route requires high-clearance 4WD for the final 4 miles due to washouts, loose rock, and steep grades up to 18%. Best tackled from May through October when snow doesn’t block the upper reaches. No permits needed, but the road crosses private ranch land for the first 8 miles – stay on the marked route and close all gates. Bring plenty of water and fuel; the nearest services are 40 miles away in Killdeer. At the summit, the old tower offers 360-degree views that make this the best overlook in western North Dakota.
