Steens Mountain — Blitzen Crossing Water Source
The Donner und Blitzen River — yes, that’s its full name — drains the western slope of Steens Mountain and runs clear and cold through most of the season. Overlanders working the Steens Mountain Loop Road or camping at Page Springs and Fish Lake use crossing points along the lower Blitzen valley to top off water supplies. The river runs reliably from snowmelt through late summer; by September flow drops but doesn’t typically dry. Always filter or treat — cattle graze the surrounding BLM allotments and giardia is a real possibility.
The most accessible water pull is near the Page Springs Campground area where the river is wide and shallow. Drive the Steens Mountain Loop Road south from Frenchglen — it’s paved to Page Springs and turns gravel above. Best season is May through October before the road closes with snow. Cell service: essentially zero out here.
