Soda Dry Lake Playa
This 25-square-mile prehistoric lake bed forms one of the largest unbroken flat surfaces in North America, its white alkali crust creating an otherworldly landscape that seems to extend infinitely toward surrounding mountain ranges. The playa served as a land speed record venue in the early 20th century and still hosts high-speed vehicle testing today. On clear days, the flatness creates stunning mirages and allows views of peaks 50+ miles away.
Access is from several dirt tracks off Zzyzx Road and Kelbaker Road, though the exact entry points shift with seasonal flooding and salt mining operations. The surface can be deceptively soft after rain, trapping vehicles in alkaline mud that’s hell on paint and undercarriages. Completely exposed with no facilities — wind and sun are relentless.
