This Spanish Colonial Revival depot served the Union Pacific until 1985, when it was abandoned to the desert wind. The National Park Service brought it back to life as the main visitor center for Mojave National Preserve. Inside you’ll find exhibits on railroad history, desert ecology, and plenty of cold water to refill bottles. The depot sits alone in a vast creosote flat, with the Providence Mountains rising to the north.
Restrooms, water, and rangers who actually know the backcountry trails. The building itself is worth the stop — thick walls keep it surprisingly cool even when it’s baking outside. No camping here, but plenty of dispersed options nearby along Kelso Dunes Road.
