Devil’s Playground Volcanic Field

Point of Interest

This otherworldly volcanic field covers roughly 40 square miles of the eastern Mojave Desert, featuring dozens of cinder cones, solidified lava flows, and bizarre rock formations. The largest cone rises nearly 500 feet above the desert floor, while twisted lava formations create natural sculptures throughout the area. The dark volcanic rock contrasts sharply with the lighter desert floor, creating an almost moonlike landscape.

Access is via rough dirt roads branching off Kelbaker Road — high-clearance vehicles recommended for exploring beyond the main viewing areas. No marked trails or facilities, so navigation skills essential. The area can be explored year-round but is most comfortable during cooler months. Carry extra water and let someone know your plans before heading into the backcountry sections.
