Rock Creek Lake — Beartooth Plateau High-Alpine Viewpoint
Rock Creek Lake sits at roughly 9,100 feet on the Beartooth Plateau, tucked into a granite cirque just a short pull-off from the Beartooth Highway. The lake itself reflects the surrounding talus slopes and snowfields well into July. It’s the kind of place that stops rigs in their tracks — park, stretch your legs, and remind yourself why you drove this road. Wildlife is active up here: mountain goats on the talus, pikas in the rocks, and raptors working the thermals above the plateau rim.
Access is directly off US-212 between Red Lodge and Cooke City — no dirt road required. The plateau typically opens in late May to early June depending on snowpack, and can close again with early fall storms in September. Wind up here is no joke; even on calm days the exposed bench can push 30+ mph gusts. Cell service is nonexistent. Fuel up in Red Lodge before climbing — the next reliable stop is Cooke City, 60+ miles west.
Alpine cirque lake, glacial granite, no crowds.
