Perito Moreno Glacier Viewpoint

Point of Interest

Perito Moreno Glacier advances 2 meters per day toward Lago Argentino, creating a 200-foot-high wall of blue ice that spans 3 miles across. Unlike most Patagonian glaciers, Perito Moreno maintains equilibrium between ice accumulation and melting, occasionally damming the lake’s Brazo Rico arm until ice pressure causes dramatic ruptures. The glacier regularly calves massive ice chunks with thunderous cracks that echo across the lake.

The main viewpoint sits on a series of elevated walkways and platforms built into the rocky peninsula opposite the glacier face, accessible via paved road from El Calafate 80 kilometers away. Multiple viewing levels provide different perspectives, with the lower platforms offering close-up views of calving events. The site includes a visitor center, restaurant, and boat dock for ice trekking tours.
