Namib Desert — Welwitschia Flats Living Fossil Viewpoint

The Welwitschia Flats sit on the gravel plains of the central Namib, roughly 60 km northeast of Swakopmund inside the Namib-Naukluft Park. These grotesque, two-leaved relics — some carbon-dated past 1,500 years — look like the desert tried to grow something and gave up halfway. The flats stretch across a wide pale pan with the Swakop River cutting through in flood years. There’s a marked self-drive trail loop with numbered interpretive stops and a prominent ancient specimen labeled the ‘Big Welwitschia.’

Access requires a permit from NamibRand or the MET office in Swakopmund — cheap and easy to grab on the way out of town. The road is good gravel, manageable by a standard high-clearance 2WD in dry conditions. No camping on the flats themselves; base at Swakopmund or the Goanikontes oasis upstream. Go early morning — the light on those ancient plants before 9am is worth setting an alarm for.
