Lewis and Clark National Forest — South Fork Sun River Corridor Dispersed Camp
The South Fork Sun River runs cold and clear down out of the Bob Marshall Wilderness before spilling across the broad valley floor near Benchmark. Dispersed sites along this corridor sit on gravel bars and timbered benches close enough to the water to hear it all night. This is prime elk and grizzly habitat — you’ll likely see evidence of both. No toilets, no fire rings, no cell signal. This is the real Montana backcountry staging zone; come self-sufficient and leave nothing behind. Fires subject to USFS seasonal restrictions — check before you strike a match.
Access is via Forest Road 235 (Benchmark Road) out of Augusta. The final miles approaching the wilderness boundary are rougher and may require 4WD in wet conditions. River crossings on side spurs vary significantly with snowmelt — high water in early summer makes some sites inaccessible. Mid-July through early October is the sweet spot. The wilderness boundary is right there — don’t push motorized vehicles past the Benchmark trailhead.
Bob Marshall edge camp — grizzly country, cold water.
