Benchmark Road — Rocky Mountain Front Wilderness Gateway Viewpoint
Standing at the end of Benchmark Road, the Continental Divide wall rises hard to the west while the plains roll out behind you. This is the primary vehicle-accessible staging point for the South Fork Sun River drainage and the Bob Marshall Wilderness. The Rocky Mountain Front here is raw — limestone reefs, open sky, and the kind of quiet that reminds you how far from anywhere you actually are. It’s a legitimate orientation point before committing to the backcountry, and worth pausing to pull out a topo and study what’s ahead.
Benchmark Road (Forest Road 235) runs roughly 30 miles from Augusta into the Lewis and Clark National Forest. The last several miles are washboard gravel and can get soft after rain. Expect no services beyond the Benchmark Campground facilities. Grizzly bear country — full stop. Late June through October is prime access window; spring snowmelt can make the road impassable well into May.
