Lewis and Clark National Forest — Benchmark Road Dispersed Camp
Benchmark Road (Forest Road 235) runs south from Augusta toward the Benchmark Wilderness Ranch trailhead, cutting through open ponderosa and lodgepole on the edge of the Rocky Mountain Front. Dispersed sites along this corridor are classic National Forest pull-offs — flat, unfenced, and free. You’re in serious grizzly and elk country here, so hang your food and be bear-aware. The South Fork Sun River drainage is visible in the distance and the sunsets over the Front Range will rearrange your priorities. No facilities, no signage, no babysitting.
Road is generally gravel with some rougher sections closer to the wilderness boundary. Passable for high-clearance 2WD in dry conditions; wet weather turns the clay sections slick. Best window is July through September — snowpack lingers into June and the road can close entirely in fall. Check with the Augusta Ranger District (Helena-Lewis and Clark NF) before heading out.
Rocky Mountain Front dispersed, zero frills.
