Benchmark Campground — Lewis and Clark National Forest

Established Campground

Benchmark is the last developed camp before you’re swallowed by the Bob Marshall Wilderness — and it earns that reputation. Small USFS campground with basic sites along the South Fork Sun River corridor, surrounded by lodgepole and open meadow. It’s a legitimate overland staging point: you’ll share it with horse packers, fly fishers, and hunters depending on the season. Gets busy in August and again hard in September when elk season opens. Fire rings, vault toilets, no hookups. The vibe is working wilderness, not glamping.

Access is via Benchmark Road (Forest Road 235) out of Augusta — about 28 miles of gravel and dirt, passable by most high-clearance rigs in dry conditions. Snow can hit by October and the road isn’t maintained in winter. No cell signal out here. Water from the river — treat it. This is your jump-off; fuel up and resupply in Augusta before you roll in.

Last developed camp before the Bob Marshall.
