Klondike River — Dempster Highway Crossing and Floodplain Viewpoint
Just north of Dawson City, the Dempster Highway crosses the Klondike River on a bridge that marks a psychological and geographic threshold — paved world behind you, true subarctic wilderness ahead. The floodplain spreads wide here: braided channels, gravel bars, and cottonwood thickets backed by the first Ogilvie ridgelines. Moose frequent the river corridor at dawn and dusk. The light on the gravel bars in evening is something you’ll want a camera out for. Pull over on the wide shoulder and take five minutes to look around — you’re committing to the Dempster from here.
Sits at the base of the North Fork Pass run toward Tombstone. Ties to the Midway Lake Road corridor and anything running north toward Eagle Plains. Cell service drops to nothing shortly past this point. Fuel in Dawson before you roll — next reliable stop is Eagle Plains at Mile 229.
The Dempster gets serious right here.
