Yukon River Loop Road

Klondike gold country's forgotten mining circuit

Expert

This remote circuit in Canada’s Yukon Territory connects Dawson City to the abandoned mining settlement of Fortymile via a network of winter roads that become passable tracks in summer. The route follows traditional Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in trading paths along the Yukon and Fortymile rivers, passing through country where gold rush stampeders once struggled toward their fortunes. The highlight is the crossing of Bonanza Creek – yes, the same creek where it all started in 1896 – and the challenging climb over King Solomon’s Dome, where mechanical failures have stranded many unprepared drivers.

Expert-level difficulty demands serious preparation: winch, recovery gear, extra fuel, and a satellite communicator are non-negotiable. The route is only passable July through September, and even then expect deep mud holes, creek crossings, and sections where the ‘road’ is more suggestion than reality. Dawson City is your last chance for supplies and fuel for the next 150 miles. No permits required, but inform someone of your plans – cell service doesn’t exist out here. What awaits is authentic Klondike wilderness, caribou herds, and the kind of solitude that reminds you why you started overlanding in the first place.
