The main trailhead into the 113,000-acre Jarbidge Wilderness sits at the end of a 50-mile gravel road from Elko. Parking area accommodates maybe a dozen vehicles, with vault toilets and trail register. The wilderness protects the headwaters of the Jarbidge River and some of Nevada’s highest peaks outside the Sierra.
Getting here is half the adventure — the road from Elko is rough in places and impassable when snowed in (roughly November through May). The tiny town of Jarbidge, just a mile from the trailhead, has a general store and saloon for last-minute supplies or a cold beer after hiking.
