Thousand Springs Scenic Byway Snake River Canyon

Natural artesian springs cascade from basalt cliffs along the Snake River, creating Idaho's most spectacular waterfall corridor.

The Snake River carved a dramatic canyon through ancient basalt flows, creating perfect conditions for thousands of natural springs to emerge from the cliff faces. These artesian springs maintain constant 58°F temperatures year-round, feeding massive trout farms and creating ethereal waterfalls that plunge directly into the river. Shoshone Falls anchors the north end while smaller cascades dot the entire 50-mile corridor. Multiple viewpoints offer different perspectives of this geological marvel.

Highway 30 parallels the canyon rim with numerous pullouts and access points. Some springs require short hikes down steep trails to reach optimal viewing spots. The Thousand Springs area near Hagerman offers the most concentrated spring activity. Best photography light occurs in morning and late afternoon when low-angle sun illuminates the mist.
