Humpback Rocks — Blue Ridge Parkway Milepost 5.8 Overlook

Humpback Rocks sits right off the Blue Ridge Parkway at Milepost 5.8, about 20 miles northeast of Waynesboro. The formation is a cluster of exposed quartzite outcrops perched above treeline, and on a clear day you’re looking west across the Shenandoah Valley all the way into West Virginia. It’s one of those places that earns its reputation — the valley views are real, the exposure is real, and the trailhead has solid infrastructure for a quick stop. Overlanders running the TAT through the Virginia Highlands corridor use this as a natural break point between Clifton Forge and the western push toward Wytheville.

Parkway access is paved; the trailhead parking lot handles trucks with trailers on most days. The summit trail is about 0.8 miles each way with serious elevation gain — plan 45 minutes round trip. Blue Ridge Parkway can close at the first sign of ice or snow, so check conditions if you’re running it late October through March. No camping at the trailhead lot itself — nearest developed camp is Otter Creek Campground south on the Parkway.
