Horseshoe Bend
This iconic river bend cuts a dramatic horseshoe curve 1,000 feet below the rim, with emerald water contrasting against red canyon walls. The overlook requires a 1.5-mile round-trip hike across slickrock desert — no shade, no water, and the final approach to the rim is unguarded cliff. The view is spectacular but crowds can be crushing, especially at sunrise and sunset when photographers line the edge.
Access is off Highway 89 just south of Page, Arizona. The parking lot expanded in recent years but still fills by mid-morning in peak season. Bring water and sun protection — the desert crossing is deceptively brutal. Early morning or late afternoon light transforms the canyon colors, but plan for company.
