Backway to Antelope Canyon
Sand wash route to iconic slot canyon country.
The sand track to Upper Antelope Canyon cuts through classic Navajo Nation high desert, following ancient washes that have carved slot canyons for millennia. This isn’t the tourist bus route — you’re running deep sand for miles through sagebrush country, with the iconic Antelope Canyon slot barely visible until you’re almost on top of it. The approach requires deflating tires and understanding sand driving fundamentals, as getting stuck here means a very expensive recovery.
This is moderate difficulty purely due to the sand driving requirements — stock 4WD can handle it if you know what you’re doing, but momentum and tire pressure are everything. You’ll need a Navajo Nation permit and guide for canyon access, which must be arranged in advance through authorized tour companies. Spring and fall offer the best conditions, avoiding summer heat and winter mud. No dispersed camping is allowed on Navajo land. The experience connects you to one of the Southwest’s most photographed geological wonders through the back door most visitors never see.
