This steel fire tower rises from the 5,946-foot summit of Grandfather Mountain, providing fire detection coverage across western North Carolina’s rugged terrain. Built in the 1950s, the 85-foot tower offers commanding views of the Linville Gorge, Boone, and the surrounding Blue Ridge peaks. During clear conditions, visibility extends into Tennessee and Virginia. The tower is typically staffed during fire season and visitors can climb to the observation deck.
Access requires a moderate hike from the Grandfather Mountain State Park parking area via the Grandfather Trail.
