Gibb River Road — Barnett River Gorge Track Dispersed Camp

Dispersed Camping

Flat, sandy clearings on the Barnett River corridor — nothing formal here, just a shaded pull-off from the red dirt track where overlanders have been laying swags for decades. The gorge itself is a short walk downstream; the river runs seasonal, and when it’s up the whole area feels alive with bird noise and the smell of pandanus. No facilities, no signs, no caretaker. Fires subject to WA DBCA restrictions — check current status before you light anything.

Access is off the Gibb River Road between the Mount Barnett Roadhouse and the Imintji Community turn-off, roughly 12–15 km of corrugated dirt to reach the gorge track. High-clearance 4WD is mandatory, especially after any rain. Crossing depths on the Barnett itself vary wildly wet-season to dry — plan accordingly. Best May through September; avoid entirely in the wet.

Shaded sandy banks in Kimberley gorge country.
