Tunnel Creek is one of the Kimberley’s oldest secrets — a 750-metre-long natural tunnel carved through the Napier Range by the Tunnel Creek waterway, used as a hideout by Aboriginal resistance fighter Jandamarra in the 1890s. The drive from Tunnel Creek north to Windjana Gorge tracks the ancient Devonian reef wall, with the corrugated track cutting through spinifex flats before the gorge opens up like a crack in the earth — 3.5 kilometres of towering 100-metre limestone walls flanking the Lennard River. Freshwater crocodiles line the banks year-round. The track itself runs roughly 30 kilometres of unsealed dirt, crossable in a single day but deserving more time.
Suitable for a standard high-clearance 4WD in the dry season (May–October); wet season access is impossible — roads flood and close completely. No fuel between Derby and Fitzroy Crossing, roughly 250 kilometres apart, so fill up. Windjana Gorge National Park requires a camping fee paid online. Water is available at Windjana but treat anything sourced from the river. This short corridor punches well above its distance — the geology alone is worth the detour, and the birdlife at dusk in the gorge is something you don’t forget.

A stock high-clearance 4WD is the minimum — unmodified Hilux, Prado, or Patrol will manage. The surface is corrugated dirt and gravel with shallow water crossings, not technical rock work, so a lift isn't required but decent all-terrain tyres are.
Can I run this corridor outside the May–October dry season?
No. The wet season turns this country into impassable bog and flood country. Roads close, crossings become dangerous, and the DBCA parks themselves shut. Dry season only — late April is often still risky depending on the year.

Derby is your last guaranteed fuel stop, roughly 120–130km west of Windjana Gorge. There is no fuel between Derby and Fitzroy Crossing along this route. Carry extra water too — there's no potable supply at either park and the croc-inhabited freshwater in the gorge is not suitable for drinking.
