Mornington Wilderness Camp — Fitzroy River Gorge Viewpoint
Mornington Wilderness Camp sits inside the Australian Wildlife Conservancy’s Mornington Sanctuary, roughly midway along the Gibb River Road corridor. From the escarpment above camp, the Fitzroy River winds through layered sandstone gorges — steep-sided country that feels genuinely untouched. The AWC manages this land for wildlife recovery, and the density of birdlife here is exceptional even by Kimberley standards. It’s one of the few places along the Gibb run where you can stand on a ridge and watch freshwater crocs cruise without another vehicle in sight.
Access is via an unsigned station track off the main Gibb River Road. Dry season only — roughly May through October. The track to the gorge viewpoint is rocky and requires high-clearance; 4WD recommended. The Mornington Camp facilities are modest but functional. Book ahead through AWC — this isn’t drop-in country.
