Downton Lake — Lajoie Dam FSR Trailhead and Staging Area
Sitting at the eastern end of Downton Lake where the Lajoie Dam road meets the Carpenter Lake FSR network, this staging area is a known congregation point for rigs headed into the South Chilcotin backcountry. The lake is long and cold, the air smells like pine and glacial silt, and there’s enough flat ground to spread out a rig check before you head deeper into the Bridge River country. It’s informal — no signage, no vault toilet — but well-used by locals and documented in BC Forest Service recreation maps.
Access via the Gold Bridge Road corridor. Road surface is graded gravel with rougher sections after spring melt. High-clearance 2WD handles it outside of blowout season. Cell service is essentially gone once you leave Gold Bridge. Best run late June through September when snow is off the high FSRs.
Gateway staging for Bridge River country FSRs.
