This legendary fire lookout sits at 6,102 feet on Desolation Peak, made famous by Jack Kerouac who worked here as a fire spotter in 1956. The 14×14-foot cabin offers dramatic views into the heart of North Cascades National Park, with glacier-clad peaks stretching to the horizon. The lookout is still occasionally staffed during fire season, but visitors can explore the area around the structure.
Access requires a boat ride up Ross Lake (or a grueling 16-mile hike), followed by a steep 4.5-mile trail gaining 4,400 feet. The hike is strenuous with loose rock and limited water. Most overlanders use the Ross Lake water taxi service from Diablo Dam. Weather can change rapidly; snow possible any month at elevation. Camping permitted at Desolation Lake below the peak, but no water sources near the lookout.
