Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site Museum
The museum sits at the base of Monks Mound, the largest prehistoric earthwork in the Americas, offering exhibits on the Mississippian people who built this complex urban center around 1050-1200 CE. Interactive displays explain the sophisticated city planning, agriculture, and trade networks that supported 10,000-20,000 residents. The site includes a theater, artifact galleries, and panoramic views from the Grand Plaza observation deck.
Open year-round with seasonal hours. The museum provides context before exploring the 72 surviving mounds across 2,200 acres. Parking is free, and the site connects directly to the Illinois River Bluffs trail system. Summer can be brutally hot with little shade on the mounds themselves.
