Illinois River Bluffs Cahokia Mounds Access Road
Ancient pathways through limestone bluff country
Long before European contact, the Cahokia people carved terraces into these limestone bluffs overlooking the American Bottom, and their ghost roads still thread through Madison and St. Clair counties today. This network of forgotten township roads and maintenance tracks connects archaeological sites scattered across the Mississippi River floodplain, including the massive Monks Mound complex. The route challenges drivers with steep limestone grades, particularly the notorious “Devil’s Backbone” ridge section where loose rock and narrow passages demand precise wheel placement.
High-clearance vehicles recommended, though stock SUVs can manage dry conditions carefully. Spring and fall offer the best weather, but avoid this area during flood season when the American Bottom becomes impassable. No permits required for the public roads, though some archaeological sites have restricted access. Multiple primitive camping opportunities exist on private land with permission. This route offers a unique combination of pre-Columbian history and challenging limestone bluff terrain that few Illinois overlanders ever experience.
