Pere Marquette State Park Illinois River Bluffs Technical Loop

Technical limestone bluffs above two great rivers

Difficult

Pere Marquette’s backcountry fire roads climb the limestone bluffs where the Illinois River meets the Mississippi, offering some of the most technical driving in the Prairie State. The route follows old CCC-era maintenance roads up McAdams Peak and through Lover’s Leap section, with steep limestone ledges, loose shale sections, and creek crossings that turn treacherous after rain. The trail passes through remnant oak-hickory forests and prairie openings, with the Twin Springs shelter marking the technical midpoint where drivers navigate a particularly challenging creek ford.

Rated difficult due to steep limestone grades, loose rock sections, and seasonal creek crossings that require careful line choice. Stock 4WD with low range essential, along with recovery gear and experience reading limestone traction. Best attempted during dry periods from late summer through fall when creek levels drop. No permits required, but notify park staff of backcountry travel plans. Dispersed camping prohibited within park boundaries, but the lodge and campground provide base camp options. This is Illinois technical driving at its finest — challenging terrain wrapped in Mississippi River valley scenery.
