Forest Road 154 — Lonesome Pine to Lost Creek via Ouachita Highlands Rim (Tennessee)

Forest Road 154 in Cherokee National Forest runs the spine of the Unaka Mountain range between Erwin and Unicoi County, staying high enough on the ridge to offer open views east toward Roan Mountain and west into the Nolichucky gorge. The road is maintained gravel with occasional muddy stretches and embedded rock, climbing past old logging cuts where second-growth forest has grown back thick. A key waypoint is the junction with FR 230 near Lost Creek, where a short spur drops toward a primitive campsite above the creek drainage. The Nolichucky River is audible in the canyon below before you can see it — that sound alone is worth the drive.
This is an accessible route for high-clearance two-wheel drive in dry conditions, though wet clay sections after rain can catch even 4WD rigs off-guard. Spring and fall are the prime seasons — summer thunderstorms can make the clay treacherous fast, and fall color here is exceptional. No permits required. Erwin has fuel, a grocery store, and a decent burger. Cell service is spotty at best along the ridge.
