Buffalo Peaks Wilderness — North Fork South Platte Viewpoint

Traveling the Weston Pass Road on the South Park (east) side, the twin summits of East Buffalo Peak (13,300 ft) and West Buffalo Peak (13,326 ft) dominate the northern skyline. These are the defining landmarks of the Buffalo Peaks Wilderness, a 43,000-acre chunk of Pike-San Isabel that sees a fraction of the traffic hitting the Collegiate Peaks across the valley. The broad, treeless view from the road corridor — across sage flats and willow-choked creek drainages — is genuinely striking, especially in early morning light when the peaks hold alpenglow while the basin is still in shadow.

The wilderness boundary begins just off the road, and several unofficial pullouts give you a place to stop, glass the terrain, and get your bearings. There are no developed trailheads with formal signage directly off Weston Pass Road, but the South Fork trailhead accessing the peaks is close by on the Fairplay side. This is prime elk and pronghorn country — keep eyes open at dawn and dusk.
