Weston Pass — Historic Mining Road Summit Viewpoint

Weston Pass is the high point on the eponymous forest road linking Fairplay to US-24 near Antero Junction. The summit sits at roughly 11,921 feet on the Mosquito Range and marks the Continental Divide between South Park’s wide-open basin and the tight Arkansas River corridor. On a clear day you get sweeping views of Buffalo Peaks to the north, the Sawatch Range to the west, and the Sangre de Cristo peaks stretching south. In the 1870s and 1880s this was a primary freight wagon route hauling ore and supplies between Leadville and the railroad at Fairplay — you can still feel that history in the rutted bench cuts along the upper switchbacks.

The road (USFS FR 425/426) is typically passable by high-clearance 2WD in dry summer conditions, though the upper mile tightens up and benefits from 4WD after any rain. Snow lingers into June and returns early October. No services, no signage at the summit beyond a small marker — just open ridgeline, thin air, and a long view.
