Black Rock Point — Black Rock Desert Playa Landmark

Black Rock Point is the geological anchor of the whole Black Rock Desert experience. This dark basalt promontory rises abruptly from the flat playa and was a critical navigation landmark for Applegate-Lassen Trail emigrants pushing west. Standing at the base of the rock with the playa stretching south to the horizon and the Calico Range looming behind you is one of those high-desert moments you don’t forget. The point is only a short walk from where you park — bring water, bring a wide-angle lens, and go at sunrise or sunset when the light hits the rock face right.

Reached via dirt roads northwest of Gerlach — the playa itself is accessible when dry, but the Black Rock surface can turn to a tire-swallowing mud bog after any significant rain. Check with the BLM Winnemucca Field Office before crossing the playa surface. No facilities anywhere near here. Cell service is nonexistent.
