High Rock Canyon — Black Rock Desert Wilderness Gateway

High Rock Canyon is the real deal. Sheer rhyolite walls rising hundreds of feet above the canyon floor, painted in reds, tans, and rust — it’s the kind of place that stops you mid-sentence. Emigrant wagons rolled through here on the Applegate-Lassen Trail in the 1840s, and the ruts and inscriptions are still legible on the canyon walls. The canyon connects the Black Rock Desert playa to the High Rock Lake area and is the centerpiece of the Calico Mountains Wilderness Loop. Wildlife is dense — pronghorn, raptors, wild horses. No services anywhere near here.

Access from Gerlach via dirt and gravel roads across the playa fringe — high-clearance is strongly recommended, 4WD helpful when conditions are wet. The BLM Winnemucca District manages this corridor. Roads can be impassable after rain or snow. No signage inside the canyon. Best visited May through October. Cell service is nonexistent.
