South Fork Sun River — Gibson Reservoir Viewpoint
Gibson Reservoir is the last large body of water before the Sun River Gorge pinches into the Bob Marshall Wilderness. The limestone canyon walls here are dramatic and close, with the Rocky Mountain Front rising immediately above the waterline. The reservoir is a legitimate waypoint for overlanders staged out of Benchmark — it marks the definitive transition from accessible forest road into wilderness-adjacent terrain. Wildlife density is high; elk, mule deer, and bear sightings are routine. It’s a solid spot to stop, glass the walls, and drink in the scale of what’s around you.
Access is via Forest Road 108 off Benchmark Road, passable by high-clearance 2WD in dry conditions. The road hugs the reservoir’s south shore. No boat ramp for large craft. The Sun River Wildlife Management Area surrounds the reservoir and enforces seasonal access restrictions to protect elk winter range — check current closures with Montana FWP before planning a fall trip into this corridor.
