Closed Canyon Trailhead — FM 170 Rio Grande Slot Canyon

Closed Canyon is a pull-off right off FM 170 about 18 miles west of Lajitas inside Big Bend Ranch State Park. The canyon walls close in to arm-width in places, carved by flash floods through volcanic tuff, and the hike runs about 1.4 miles round-trip to the Rio Grande. It’s short, but it punches hard — this is the kind of stop that makes the River Road more than just a drive. The trailhead has basic signage, and TPWD has improved the parking area. No water, no shade at the parking area itself.

Flash flooding is a genuine danger in this canyon — if there’s any rain in the mountains to the south or west, don’t be in there. The canyon walls give you zero escape. Access is entirely off FM 170 (paved), so any rig can get here. Combine it with the River Road run as a natural break point. Day-use entry fee or annual state park pass required.
