Sani Pass — Underberg to Mokhotlong via the Drakensberg Escarpment

Loose shale, big exposure, highest pub in Africa.

Expert

Sani Pass doesn’t care about your confidence. The 9 km climb from the South African border post at the base to the Lesotho customs post at 2874 metres above sea level is all loose basalt shale, off-camber ledges, and switchbacks so tight that a long-wheelbase Land Cruiser needs multiple cuts to make the corners. The pass links Underberg in KwaZulu-Natal to Mokhotlong in the Kingdom of Lesotho and has been a pack mule trade route since Basotho traders carried goods over the Berg long before anyone pointed a bumper at it. At the summit, the Sani Mountain Lodge operates what is legitimately the highest pub in Africa — a pint of Maluti is a mandatory summit tradition.

Sani Pass requires a 4WD with low-range gearing and good ground clearance — this is not negotiable and South African and Lesotho border authorities will turn you back in a 2WD or soft-roader. A Lesotho visa is required for most nationalities and is issued at the top border post. Best driven May to September during the dry winter window; summer thunderstorms make the shale dangerously slick and the pass regularly closes in snow. Fuel in Mokhotlong is scarce and expensive — fill up in Underberg. The descent demands more respect than the climb. Watch your brakes.
