Garden Castle Nature Reserve — Mashai River Dispersed Camp

Dispersed Camping

Garden Castle is a lesser-known entry point into the southern uKhahlamba-Drakensberg, managed by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife. Dispersed camping along the Mashai River drainage puts you in classic Drakensberg sandstone-and-grassland terrain — no crowds, no noise, and a sky full of stars. It’s used by horse trail riders and serious hikers as a base, but overlanders with permits can overnight at primitive designated areas. Water from the river requires treatment. Firewood is scarce; bring your own.

Access runs off the R617 south of Underberg and requires a valid Ezemvelo permit booked in advance — walk-in availability is limited. The gravel access track is suitable for high-clearance vehicles but gets slick in wet weather. Snow is possible above 2,400m in winter (June–August), so time your run accordingly. This is a genuine wilderness camp — plan for full self-sufficiency.

Wild Drakensberg camp, no frills.
