Ben Nevis — Fort William Summit Approach Viewpoint
Ben Nevis is the highest ground in the British Isles — 1,345 metres of ancient granite rising out of the Great Glen above Fort William. The Glen Nevis Visitor Centre at the base of the mountain road is where most people stage. The viewpoint from the lower glen — looking up the Nevis Gorge toward the summit cliffs — is worth stopping for even if you’re not hiking. The north face drops nearly 700 metres of technical cliff into the Allt a’ Mhuilinn corrie. This is serious mountain terrain.
Access road up Glen Nevis from Fort William is paved to the upper car park. Any vehicle gets you there. The summit trailhead is at the Visitor Centre (NN123731). Snow can sit in north-facing gullies year-round. Fort William is a solid resupply point — fuel, groceries, and outdoor gear all available. Summer weekends are crowded. October through April the mountain belongs to the weather.
