Loch Naver to Altnaharra — Flow Country Estate Track via Strathnaver

Clearance ruins and UNESCO bog in Sutherland's void.

Moderate

Strathnaver is one of the most historically charged valleys in the Scottish Highlands — this is the ground of the Sutherland Clearances, where Patrick Sellar burned out communities in 1814 to make way for sheep. The track along the north shore of Loch Naver runs from Syre past the ruins of cleared townships — Rosal pre-clearance township is a scheduled monument just off the route — through open Flow Country blanket bog toward Altnaharra at the head of Loch Naver. The UNESCO World Heritage-listed Flow Country surrounding this route is the largest blanket bog ecosystem in the world. You drive through peat hags, sedge flats, and open water systems that feel genuinely primeval. On a grey day the emptiness here is absolute.

The track surface is compacted gravel with soft peat margins — it’s passable for a stock high-clearance 4WD in dry summer conditions but the surrounding ground is deeply saturated and leaving the track even briefly will bog you immediately. After September rain the track itself can develop soft patches. This is proper remote driving — the nearest recovery is a very long way away. Carry recovery gear, a spare, and enough fuel to get out without resupply; Altnaharra has no fuel. The Rosal township ruins are worth the stop. Best season is May through August. No permits required for through travel on the estate track, but respect deer stalking operations August onwards. Cell service is non-existent.
