Knoydart Peninsula Track — Kinloch Hourn to Inverie via the Rough Bounds

Britain's remotest mainland track.

Expert

Knoydart earns its nickname. The Rough Bounds track running from the road-end at Kinloch Hourn westward toward Inverie is as isolated as British mainland driving gets — no public road reaches Inverie from any direction, and the estate track threading through Barrisdale Bay and over the flanks of Ladhar Bheinn is gated, rough, and deeply serious in wet weather. You’ll ford the Barrisdale River at the bay, skirt the edge of Loch Hourn’s tidal reaches, and claw through peat bog sections that have swallowed unprepared vehicles whole. Permission from Knoydart Estate is required before you attempt the private track sections.

This is an Expert-level route. High-clearance 4WD is mandatory, a snatch strap and high-lift jack are not optional, and a second vehicle is strongly recommended. Cell service is nonexistent from Kinloch Hourn westward. The track is passable summer through early autumn — winter adds impassable bog and dangerous river levels. Fuel at Invergarry before you go; there’s nothing beyond that. What you get out here is genuine wilderness, stag on the hillside, and the satisfaction of reaching a pub — the Old Forge in Inverie — that most people can only reach by ferry.
