Sumter National Forest Wambaw District Swamp Fox Trail
Revolutionary War ghost trail through swamplands
The Swamp Fox Trail honors Revolutionary War hero Francis Marion, who used these very swamplands to outmaneuver British forces in the 1780s. This 47-mile route connects the Francis Marion National Forest with Sumter National Forest’s Wambaw District, following old logging roads and military paths through blackwater swamps, longleaf pine stands, and bottomland hardwood forests. The trail crosses the South Santee River at several points and passes remnants of rice plantation dikes and Civil War earthworks.
Moderate difficulty requiring high-clearance 4WD during wet seasons when water crossings can reach two feet deep. Summer brings oppressive humidity and aggressive mosquitoes—spring and fall offer the best conditions. No permits needed, but carry recovery gear and inform someone of your route. Multiple primitive camping spots exist along the trail, and the Santee River provides fishing opportunities. You’ll experience authentic Lowcountry wilderness where American guerrilla warfare tactics were born.
