Francis Marion National Forest Swamp Fox Passage
Revolutionary War guerrilla route through coastal lowlands.
The Swamp Fox Passage cuts through the same Carolina lowcountry where Francis Marion waged guerrilla warfare against the British. This 18-mile route follows old timber roads and hunter access routes through Francis Marion National Forest, connecting Highway 41 to the Santee River. The trail crosses Wadboo Creek three times, with the second crossing requiring careful line selection through a rocky bottom that’ll test your differential locks.
Moderate difficulty with seasonal variables — spring rains turn clay sections into slick challenges while summer heat makes the deep sand stretches a slog. High-clearance 4WD required, with recovery gear recommended for the sand. Best tackled October through March when water levels are predictable and bugs bearable. No permits needed, dispersed camping allowed. You’ll earn expansive views of coastal marsh and blackwater creeks that haven’t changed much since Marion’s raiders disappeared into these same swamps.
