Francis Marion National Forest Huger Creek Phosphate Mine Heritage Trail

Industrial ruins in lowcountry swamp wilderness.

Easy

The ghost roads of the Huger Creek Phosphate Mine wind through Francis Marion’s blackwater swamp country where turn-of-the-century mining operations stripped phosphate nodules from the coastal plain geology. Massive dragline pits now hold dark water surrounded by cypress and tupelo, while rusted mining equipment and concrete foundations emerge from decades of forest reclamation. The main haul road follows elevated grades built to keep the heavy ore trucks above flood stage, creating a elevated causeway through some of the most remote swamp in the Francis Marion. Alligators use the old settling ponds as prime territory, and you’ll spot them sunning on the concrete spillways.

Easy to moderate depending on recent rains — the clay-based roads get slick as snot when wet but are perfectly manageable in dry conditions. Any high-clearance vehicle with decent tires handles it fine, though 4WD helps during wet periods. Best visited fall through early spring when the mosquitoes calm down and water levels drop. No permits required but the area floods regularly, so check conditions at the Wambaw District office before heading out. Dispersed camping allowed on higher ground, but bring everything including water — this is genuine lowcountry wilderness.
