Slieve Donard Mourne Wall Road — Newcastle to Bloody Bridge River via Mourne Mountain Track

Granite gaps and the ancient Mourne Wall.

Moderate

The Mournes are compact and brutal — granite peaks squeezed into a tight upland block above the County Down coast, laced with estate and Water Service tracks that give high-clearance vehicles a genuine workout. The route connects the outskirts of Newcastle on the northern edge to the Bloody Bridge River car park on the coast road south, climbing through the Donard Forest tracks managed by Mourne Heritage Trust and the Northern Ireland Water Service before breaking onto open granite moorland above 1,500 feet. The famous dry-stone Mourne Wall — built between 1904 and 1922 to enclose the Silent Valley catchment — runs across this ground for 35 kilometres, and the track crosses it at Hare’s Gap, one of the most exposed and photogenic col crossings in Ireland or Britain. Surface conditions range from graded gravel in the forest sections to bare granite slabs and deep peaty ruts on the upper reaches.

High-clearance is essential above the treeline; a standard SUV will bottom out on the granite steps near Hare’s Gap in anything other than ideal dry conditions. The Northern Ireland Water Service controls much of the catchment and access can be restricted without notice — check current status with Mourne Heritage Trust before departing. Newcastle has fuel and supplies; stock up there. The track is best in July and August. What you’re buying is the view from Hare’s Gap with the Mourne Wall stretching away in both directions and the Irish Sea glittering below — worth every rut and every gate.
