Cnoc an Fhreiceadain Green Road — Caithness Moorland Track via Dunbeath Strath
Caithness bog road — empty, wet, and ancient.
Caithness doesn’t do drama the way Torridon does. It does it quietly — a flat, grey, bone-soaking peat-bog emptiness that swallows vehicles and pride in equal measure. The green road through Dunbeath Strath follows an old drovers’ and peat-cutting route from Dunbeath village inland past the Laidhay Croft Museum, climbing gradually onto open moorland above Cnoc an Fhreiceadain — the Hill of the Watchman — before tracking southwest toward the upper Berriedale Water. The track surface is compacted gravel near the coast, collapsing into soft peat channels and wet ruts as you gain elevation. Mid-route the track effectively disappears in places; navigation by OS map or quality GPS is essential. Iron Age brochs dot the strath below — you’re driving through four thousand years of hard human history.
Moderate to difficult depending on season. A standard high-clearance 4×4 gets you partway, but the soft peat sections will catch out anything without proper diff lock and chunky rubber — especially spring through early summer when the bog is saturated. Late August through October is the sweet spot. No permit required, but stags-and-hinds season from October onward means checking with the local estate before pushing into the upper moor. Dunbeath village is your last fuel stop heading north. Lonely, cold, and absolutely worth it.
