Deeside to Tomintoul via Cock Bridge — Lecht Back Road and Ladder Hills Estate Track
Scotland's first road to close every winter.
The A939 between Cock Bridge and Tomintoul is the road that closes first and last in Scotland every winter — the Met Office practically has it on speed dial. But what most drivers miss is that the plateau either side of that tarmac ribbon is threaded with Forestry and Land Scotland tracks and private estate roads that push deeper into the Ladder Hills and the eastern Cairngorms than the main road ever manages. Starting at Corgarff Castle on the upper Dee near Strathdon — a sixteenth-century tower house that has been garrison, barracks, and whisky-still throughout its history — the route tracks north and west via estate roads above the Don Valley before joining the Lecht approach and cutting across open heather moorland toward Tomintoul on the Avon. The Lecht ski road itself tops out at 2,090 feet; the estate spurs push higher into the Ladder Hills proper, crossing ground that sees genuine arctic conditions from October through April.
In summer this is a moderate high-clearance run on gravel and peat track with exposed summit sections and a handful of water splashes across hill burns. In late autumn or spring it becomes a serious undertaking — snow, ice, and fog roll in without warning and the nearest recovery is a long way off. Fuel is available in Strathdon or Tomintoul; neither of those words should comfort you overmuch. The reward is the Cairngorm plateau view from the Ladder Hills ridge at last light, the smell of peat smoke drifting up from Tomintoul, and the knowledge that this corner of Scotland genuinely does not care whether you made it or not.
