Bealach na Bà — Applecross Pass Road from Lochcarron to Applecross Peninsula
Scotland's highest road. Hairpins, sheer drops, no room for error.
Bealach na Bà — Gaelic for “Pass of the Cattle” — is the highest road in Scotland and one of the most demanding drives in Britain. Beginning near Lochcarron on the A896, the single-track road ramps hard and fast up the eastern face of the Applecross peninsula through a series of brutal switchbacks with gradients hitting 1-in-5. The pass itself sits at 626m and is marked by a summit viewpoint where — on a clear day — you can see Skye, Raasay, the Outer Hebrides, and the jagged ridge of Sgùrr a’ Chaorachain. Downhill to Applecross village, the road drops through open moorland to the shore of the Inner Sound. The road is single-track with passing places the entire way.
This route is rated difficult not because of technical terrain but because of gradient, exposure, and width — one wrong read of a passing place with a caravan on your tail and you’re in trouble. Trailers and caravans are officially discouraged. High-clearance vehicles are not strictly required but a confident manual transmission or capable auto is essential on the descent. The road is often closed in winter due to ice and snow from November through March. Fuel up in Lochcarron — there is nothing on the pass. Dispersed camping is possible on the plateau near the summit and is widely practiced under Scotland’s Land Reform Act. No permit required.
